Automobile parts
An ordinary car typically requires about 1,500 sets of molds, and the total value of these molds may reach tens of millions of yuan. So the question is: How much does it cost to make a set of car molds?
The answer is: It can range from several tens of thousands of yuan to over 1.5 million yuan. The difference between these two figures is much greater than the difference between an economy car and a luxury sports car.
Why is the price so different?

The core work of a set of molds is to transform a flat sheet of steel into a complex car door, or to turn a pile of plastic particles into a delicate dashboard. This process determines that the price of the molds mainly consists of three parts: material cost accounts for 50%, processing cost accounts for 28%, and labor and management costs account for 22%. And the final price depends on the following four key factors.
1. What kind of part do you make?
This is the most important factor. A simple sheet metal bracket may only require 5-10 ten thousand yuan for the mold. But an automotive side panel outer plate - that is, the large part extending from the A-pillar to the D-pillar and containing the entire side profile - its mold may cost 3-5 million yuan. Because it is larger in size, has more complex curves, and has much higher surface precision requirements.
2. How many pieces do you produce?
Molds also have a lifespan. If you only need to produce a few hundred sample car parts, you can use "soft molds", with ordinary materials and simple processes, and the cost may be 10-20 ten thousand yuan. But if this part needs to be mass-produced with the car, the mold must withstand tens of thousands or even millions of stamping operations, and must use high-grade mold steel and undergo complex heat treatment, so the price will naturally increase several times.
3. Is the part design good?
This is the most easily overlooked but extremely influential factor. There is a real case: A certain model needed to produce a huge "middle partition" part. The original design used one set of molds to produce it, with an estimated cost of up to 4 million yuan, and required an extremely rare 4,000-ton press. Later, the engineers split this part into two smaller parts and produced them separately using two sets of molds and then assembled them. As a result, the total cost of the two sets of molds was less than 2 million yuan, and only a conventional 1500-ton press was needed. Whether the part design is "suitable for mold manufacturing" is often the fundamental reason for determining the cost.
4. Is it a stamping mold or an injection mold?
Metal parts of the body are produced using stamping molds, while plastic parts such as bumpers and dashboards use injection molds. The cost of a large injection mold for a bumper is usually between 500,000 and 1 million yuan. If the surface texture and cooling efficiency are extremely high, the price will be even higher.

Summary
Creating a set of automotive molds is not simply a matter of "buying a tool", but rather a highly customized engineering project. Its cost depends on the complexity of the parts, production requirements, material selection, and design rationality. Therefore, the total investment in molds is extremely expensive. If you want to make the molds cheaper, the best approach is not to bargain during the manufacturing process, but to involve mold engineers in the design phase - making the product "easier to manufacture" from the very beginning, which often saves half the cost.
