Injection molding

⭐Selection of gate position: A key factor influencing the weld line and warpage

In the design of injection molds, the position of the gate seems to be just a minor detail, but in fact, it has a significant impact on product quality. Many products suffer from obvious weld lines, deformation and warping, as well as unstable dimensions. The root cause of these problems often lies in the unreasonable design of the gate position.

The gate determines the direction and method of plastic melt flow into the product. If the melt splits into two streams during the flow process and then recombines, it is prone to form a weld line. This problem becomes more obvious at locations such as holes, reinforcing ribs, or multiple injection points.

For example, a plastic casing with holes. If the gate is placed on one side of the product, the molten plastic will bypass the hole and converge on the front side, eventually forming a distinct weld line on the surface. This not only affects the appearance but may also reduce the structural strength. If the gate is moved to the back or near the hole position, the weld line can be hidden or even reduced significantly.

Apart from the welding line, the location of the gate also affects the warpage of the product. Because the area close to the gate has greater pressure and more sufficient holding pressure, the shrinkage will be smaller; while the area far from the gate is more prone to larger shrinkage. When the shrinkage in different areas of the product is not uniform, deformation will occur.

For example, in a long strip-shaped product, if the glue is injected only at one end, the product often bends towards one side. This is because when the melted glue flows from one end to the other, the pressure gradually decreases, causing inconsistent contraction at both ends. If the glue injection is changed to be at the center or to be symmetrical on both sides, the warping problem usually improves significantly.

Therefore, in mold design, the position of the gate not only needs to take into account the ease of filling, but also needs to comprehensively consider the flow of molten material, pressure balance, and product structure. A reasonable gate design can effectively reduce the weld line, reduce warping, and improve the appearance and mass production stability of the product.
