⭐What Exactly Is the "Surface Fitting" Process in Mold Fitting ?

In a mold workshop, if there is one process that best demonstrates a master fitter's skill, it is undoubtedly "surface fitting." Surface fitting is the most critical and most patience-and-skill-demanding step in FIT molding (also known as "fly molding"). Its subject is the mold's parting line (PL surface) —that is, the flat or curved surface where the front mold (fixed half) and the back mold (moving half) come into contact with each other during clamping.

This surface is the first "critical checkpoint" that molten plastic encounters before it surges into the cavity under high pressure. If the fit is not tight enough—even with a gap as thin as a sheet of A4 paper (about 0.1mm)—the plastic material, subjected to injection pressures of several hundred kilograms, will instantly squeeze through, creating stubborn flash (burrs). This not only leads to product rejection but also shortens the mold's service life. Therefore, the goal of FIT surface fitting is singular: zero clearance.

The surface fitting process is a precise "red lead game," carried out in the following steps:

Applying the Red Lead: The fitter uses a fingertip or a cloth pad to evenly spread an extremely thin, almost translucent layer of red lead (or Prussian blue) onto the parting surface of the back mold. The thickness of this coating depends entirely on feel—too thick and the readings become distorted; too thin and the marks become illegible.

Clamping and Pressurizing: The front and back molds are hoisted onto the spotting press (FIT table) and clamped together under pressure. At this point, every minute irregularity on the parting surface is faithfully recorded by the red lead.

Separating and Reading the Marks: The mold is opened, and the fitter carefully examines the distribution of the transferred red lead. If the red lead has been transferred evenly and completely onto the corresponding surface of the front mold, the fit is perfect. If the red lead is pressed very thin or even worn away to reveal the bare steel in certain areas, those spots are too high (interference) and need to be stoned down. If an area shows no trace of red lead at all, it indicates a concave gap that may require welding repair or an assessment of whether it will affect the sealing of the plastic.

In the correction phase that follows, the fitter, using an oilstone or a fine file, must exercise extreme restraint and work only on the "high spots" where the red lead is too thin. There is an unbreakable rule here: remove only the high spots; never touch the low spots. After each round of stoning, the fitter reapplies the red lead, clamps the mold, and inspects the marks again—repeating this cycle, sometimes dozens of times.

The surface fitting is considered successful only when the red lead transfer coverage exceeds 95%, and no continuous, through-going gaps can be observed under a microscope. At this point, the closed parting surfaces produce a subtle "suction" resistance due to the surface tension of the oil film—a state of perfect mating that every mold craftsman strives for.

The quality of parting surface fitting directly determines the mold's reliability in sealing the plastic and the cosmetic quality of the final product. In high-end mold shops, the required precision for surface fitting can be as tight as within 0.01mm—just one-seventh the diameter of a human hair. It is this almost invisible level of precision that separates a mold that is merely "functional" from one that is "excellent," and determines whether the parts it produces end up in ordinary toys or in precision automotive components. Such is the distinctive allure of FIT mold surface fitting.
