A DFM report is like a health check-up before a mold project kicks off. It needs to spell out where potential problems might occur, where sliders are needed, and where wall thickness is uneven. But traditionally, this process relies too heavily on personal experience, and it's not uncommon for a single report to take three to five days to complete.
With AI assistance, the biggest change is letting the machine handle the heavy lifting first.
Feed the product's 3D model into an AI system, and within ten to fifteen minutes, it will flag all the undercut areas, spots with insufficient draft angles, and regions with excessive wall thickness. Engineers used to have to scan the screen and identify these issues one by one. Now, AI highlights them for you, and all you need to do is verify whether its findings are accurate.
The same goes for mold flow analysis. After running the filling simulation, AI will directly tell you where trapped air might occur, where weld lines will likely appear, and where the optimal gate location should be. There's no need for engineers to run repeated trial calculations. AI lays out the proposal first, and you make the final judgment.
The most time-saving part is that AI can even generate a draft of the DFM report directly. It handles all the tedious tasks like taking screenshots, marking annotations, and formatting the layout. Engineers simply review it, add a few comments, and it's done. What used to take three to five days can now be completed in one to two.
Of course, AI can't fully replace humans. Molds are highly customized, and AI occasionally makes errors in judgment. Ultimately, engineers still need to be the final checkpoint. But AI does help engineers eliminate a significant amount of repetitive work, allowing the master's experience to be applied where it truly matters—critical decision-making.
For mold manufacturers, AI-assisted DFM is no longer a question of whether to adopt it, but who will reap the benefits first. Fewer design changes, fewer trial molding iterations, and less rework translate directly into saved time and reduced costs—and that is tangible competitiveness.
